Think you’re near the end of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales? Don’t enter that tower. The critical branch point for the game’s three endings comes when the “Head to the sorcerer’s location” quest appears with a purple icon over the Northern Tower. Most players will march straight there, fight the boss, and roll credits with the Standard or Bad ending, completely unaware that they have locked themselves out of the canonical conclusion. The True Ending unlocks hours of extra content, including multiple additional boss encounters and a final showdown with Demise, the End-of-Time Dragon. The path to it feels deliberately counterintuitive: you must resist the main quest marker and follow a very specific sequence of steps.

This guide walks you through every prerequisite, the crucial boss fight mechanic, and the save management decisions that will keep you from accidentally sealing your fate too early.

Understanding the Three Endings, Which One Do You Want?

The Adventures of Elliot offers three distinct conclusions, each marked by a colored stamp on your save file. The Bad Ending earns you a Bronze stamp; the Standard (or “Good”) Ending gives you a Silver stamp; and the True Ending grants a Gold stamp. Only the Gold ending is canonical, and it contains the vast majority of the game’s narrative payoffs.

The True Ending path unlocks once you have completed all story quest lines in the Age of Budding, Age of Magic, and Age of Reconstruction. The final checkpoint before the branch is when the hall is set on fire in the Age of Budding. From that point, the game will guide you toward the Northern Tower. Do not go.

All Prerequisites, What You Must Do Before the Northern Tower

Before you even think about the Northern Tower, you need to complete several side objectives. Missing even one will lock you out of the True Ending.

  • Find the three Myū sages. After Lyudmila gives you the Lustrous Bell during the Age of Budding quest line, speak to the Ailurophilic Traveler across all three ages. This unlocks the ability to search for the sages:
    • Thiew (white sage) in the Geared Ruins during the Age of Magic.
    • Boyne (ebony sage) at Mount Phoenix in the Age of Reconstruction.
    • Wynat (tawny sage) at Grandtree in the Age of Budding.
  • Retrieve the Leytstaf Sword. This third-tier upgrade is a key item found on sublevel two of the Water Ruins, located north of the Western Fields of Flon in the Age of Reconstruction. You will need it later, but do not use it in the boss fight that matters most.
  • Collect the Amber Pendant (also referred to as Mao’s Pendant). It is in Heuria’s room during the Age of Safekeeping. This pendant must be equipped before the Beast of Enmity fight, and it is essential for the unique boss mechanic that opens the true ending route.
  • The cat collection question. You will need to collect enough cats, the exact number is debated; see the Save Management section for details.

The Beast of Enmity, The Boss Fight That Changes Everything

This is the make-or-break encounter. The Beast of Enmity appears when you would normally fight your way to the Standard Ending. To unlock the True Ending, you must not attack the boss.

Equip the Amber Pendant and use the Moon Shield to perform precision guards (also known as perfect parries). The specific trigger is three perfect guards, which will prompt a cutscene that advances the true ending route. If you defeat the Beast by attacking, especially with the Leytstaf Sword’s Lv.4 Special Attack (Mystic Seal/Nomutota), you will trigger the Standard Ending instead.

The timing for perfect guards is tight: watch for the beast’s wind-up animation and press the guard button just as the attack lands. A successful parry produces a distinct sound and visual flash. Repeat three times, and the battle ends without a kill.

Quick Checklist: Beast of Enmity

  • ✅ Equip the Amber Pendant
  • ✅ Use Moon Shield to perform perfect guards
  • ✅ Guard three times without attacking
  • ❌ Do not use the Leytstaf Sword’s Lv.4 Special Attack
  • ❌ Do not attack the beast at all

Final Steps, From Beast to Demise

After the cutscene triggered by the Beast of Enmity, the “Head to the sorcerer’s location” quest and the Northern Tower will finally become accessible. Enter the tower, proceed through the newly opened rooms, and you will eventually reach a volcano. There, you must restore magic to the Phoenix, which unlocks the final boss: Demise, the End-of-Time Dragon.

Demise is a multi-phase fight that serves as the true climax of the story. Defeating him nets you the Gold stamp on your save file and the canonical conclusion.

Save Management and the Cat Controversy

Once you progress too far on the True Ending path, both the Bad and Standard endings become permanently missable. If you are a completionist who wants to see all three conclusions, create manual backup saves at the point just before the Northern Tower quest appears. This lets you reload and pursue a different ending on the same file.

The cat count discrepancy remains one of the most debated topics in the community. Polygon’s early guide suggested 15 cats, but multiple playthrough-based resources from Pocket Tactics, RPG Site, and Gamereactor all converged on 35 or more. The most thorough reporting placed the threshold at 38. Since no official Square Enix source has confirmed a number, the safest approach is to collect all 50 cats. If you want to risk fewer, aim for at least 35 and hope the game agrees. Our companion guide lists every cat location.

The Golden Rule: Patience and Precision

The True Ending in The Adventures of Elliot rewards players who resist the natural instinct to follow the main quest arrow and who learn to use defense instead of offense at the critical moment. Have you already found all 50 cats, or do you have a theory about the exact number? Share your experience with the community, and check our companion cat locations guide for the full map-by-map breakdown.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is available now on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
