Open Beta Schedule, When You Can Play
The beta is split into two windows. The first is a closed early access period running from August 6 through August 10, 2026. This five-day window is reserved exclusively for players who have pre-ordered any edition of Gears of War: E-Day or are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. If you meet either condition, you can jump in from day one without any additional registration.
No pre-order? No problem. A separate open beta weekend will follow for the general public. The exact dates have not been announced yet, but The Coalition has confirmed that everyone will get a chance to play regardless of pre-order or subscription status. This two-weekend split mirrors how Gears 5 handled its multiplayer previews, giving early adopters a head start while still keeping the doors open for the wider community.
The beta focuses on 4v4 Versus PvP, the classic Gears multiplayer mode that defines the series. If you are hoping to test out Horde Siege or campaign co-op, you will need to wait for the full game. Those modes are confirmed for launch but are not guaranteed to appear in the beta. The beta is available across Xbox Series X|S, PC (including Steam), and Xbox Cloud Gaming, so there are plenty of ways to get in.

How to Get Early Access, Pre-Order vs. Game Pass
Getting into the early access window is remarkably straightforward. There are two methods, and both are easier than any previous Gears beta.
Method 1: Pre-order any edition. Whether you pick the Standard Edition at $69.99, the Premium Edition, or the full Collector's Edition, your pre-order automatically unlocks early access. Digital pre-orders trigger the access automatically on your account. If you pre-order a physical copy from a retailer, you will receive a beta code printed on the receipt or sent via email. The code is then redeemed on the Xbox or Microsoft Store.
Method 2: Subscribe to Game Pass. If you are an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscriber, you do not need to pre-order at all. Your subscription grants you early beta access at no extra cost. This is a significant change from previous Gears betas, which often required a pre-order even for Game Pass members. Simply log into the beta client when it goes live on August 6.
No additional registration steps are needed. The beta access is tied to your Microsoft account once you meet either condition. This is the most accessible Gears beta in franchise history, and The Coalition has made it clear that they want as many players as possible stress-testing the servers.
Pre-Order Bonuses and Edition Breakdown
Pre-ordering any edition also comes with cosmetic perks that carry over to the full game. Regardless of which tier you choose, you unlock the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and the Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set. These items are usable in both Versus and Horde Siege, so they are not just beta-exclusive, they are yours to keep.
The editions themselves offer a range of options for collectors and competitive players:
- Standard Edition ($69.99), The base game on Xbox or PC. Still qualifies for beta early access. No extras beyond the pre-order skins.
- Premium Edition, Adds 5-day early access to the full game (starting October 1, 2026), the Emergence Customization Pack, 4 Seasonal Packs, 1,000 Iron (in-game currency), and the Bravo Squad Weapon Pack. This is the go-to for players who want to start the campaign early and stock up on cosmetics.
- Collector's Edition, A physical bundle that includes a 15-inch Marcus & Dom diorama statue, replica COG tags, a SteelBook case, and all Premium Edition digital content. Priced higher than the digital tiers, this one is aimed at die-hard fans who want a display piece.
Pre-orders went live on June 7, 2026, immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase and the dedicated Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentation. If you are planning to buy the game anyway, pre-ordering also secures your spot in the early beta without any extra steps.

What's in the Beta and What's New
The beta revolves around 4v4 Versus PvP, the core competitive mode that has defined Gears multiplayer since 2006. Expect classic game types like Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Execution, all running on Unreal Engine 5 with substantial upgrades. The Coalition has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day features hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a new destruction and gore system that promises over 100 times more detail than Gears 5, and target frame rates of 4K 60 FPS in campaign and 120 FPS in competitive multiplayer on Xbox Series X.
This is not just a graphical refresh. The game is a linear, narrative-driven prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. You play as Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the first hours of Emergence Day in the city of Kalona. John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro reprise their iconic roles. The campaign supports up to 4-player co-op (with local split-screen for two players), while the full Horde Siege mode allows 3 squads of 4 to fight wave-based enemies. PvE content isn't confirmed for the beta, but Versus will showcase the new engine's feel and responsiveness.
Exclusivity and Launch Date
Originally, Gears of War: E-Day was planned for a PlayStation 5 release. That changed. Xbox leadership, including new head Asha Sharma, confirmed at the showcase that the game is now an Xbox console exclusive. That means it will only be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC (including Steam), and Xbox Cloud Gaming. There will be no PS5 version. For a franchise that began as an Xbox flagship, this decision feels like a return to form.
The full game launches on October 6, 2026, and it will be available day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no extra cost. Premium Edition buyers get a five-day head start starting October 1.
Developed by The Coalition with support from People Can Fly (the studio that co-developed the original trilogy), Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be a technical showcase and a narrative return to the series' gritty roots. The beta is your first chance to experience that next-generation combat.
The Beta Awaits
Whether you pre-order, lean on your Game Pass subscription, or wait for the free public weekend, the Gears of War: E-Day open beta is your ticket back to the front lines. Mark August 6 on your calendar. Lock in early access via pre-order or Game Pass. And get ready to fight the Locust Horde with ray-traced explosions and a chain saw that has never sounded this good. Gears of War: E-Day isn't just a return to the past, it's a leap forward. See you on August 6.
